Squares for Hay Bales

Have you seen the fundraising initiative that Jill from Gumleaf Crochet has started?  In case you haven’t, I’m going to tell you a bit about it!

Jill is asking us all to make 8 inch grannie squares to donate to her cause.  She (and some generous helpers) will then join all of the squares together to make blankets that will be auctioned by Burrumbuttock Hay Runners.

In case you’re not aware, Burrumbuttock Hay Runners are taking donated hay bales to drought affected farmers in Australia.  Such a generous cause and I love seeing Aussies come together to help each other in what ever way we can. #spiritofanation

If you’re interested in helping out by making some squares, then there are a few rules that you need to please follow!

  1. The square needs to be 8 inches
  2. You need to use 8ply cotton or cotton blend
  3. You can make them plain, textured or patterned
  4. Colours must be white, browns, blues and greens.
  5. You must sew in the ends (many hands makes light work of that one!)
  6. Send them by the end of March so that there is time to join and border the blankets.

If you decide to donate, then please contact Jill directly through facebook or instagram and she will let you know where to send the squares to.  If you wish to see her original post, you can find it here on instagram.

I intend to donate some!  I figure it’s the perfect way to test out some new grannie square designs.  My first one is pictured below and I have located some suitable green and brown yarn in my stash to make some more in different designs too.  8 inches is quite big for a grannie square and I had to add some extra rounds to my first one.

I have located some squares to try out and saved to a new board on pinterest.  I also have some books to use at home too!

If you make some squares, be sure to tag them with #blanketsforhaybales so that we can all see them!
