The Basic Crochet Stitches

Are you ready to learn to crochet or maybe you’re picking your hook up after a long break? Maybe I can help you. Over the past year or so I have been providing a new tutorial on this blog every month and sending them out to my email list. They’re also available in a dedicated location for all my Clubhouse members so that they don’t need to go searching the internet for the tutorial they need. I haven’t yet posted tutorials for the basic stitches, so I thought I would dedicate this post to the basics, because let’s face it, it we’re just starting out or are picking our hook up after a long break, we need to know the basics!

So let’s get started!

Single crochet (UK double crochet- is the first stitch I encourage everyone to learn after they learn to chain. It’s the simplest stitch and one that is used if you’re wanting to make amigurumi.

Building on from single crochet is the Half Double Crochet (or Half treble in UK terms). This is one of my favourite stitches and a go to stitch for me for bags and hats.

And the last of the basci stitches – Double Crochet (UK Treble). This is probably the most used stitch as it is the foundation of many of the special stitches and the stitch used to make the humble old traditional granny square. While I don’t encourage learning this stitch first, it is most often the first one that people do learn as it is the one stitch that most crocheters know best.

There is more to crochet though than just learning the basic stitches and I always encourage crocheters – new or established – to make sure that they learn to work in rounds and rows and also how to read patterns. To do that I have put together a free guide that covers all of the basics – not just the stitches. You can download it by clicking on the link below and providing some details to have it emailed to you.

Be sure to hit subscribe to my blog too so that you don’t miss any future tutorials and crochet inspiration that I have for you. Even better, sign up to my email list so that you have them all sent directly to your inbox as well as my monthly “hooked” newsletter.
