What is the Best Yarn for a Crochet Washcloth?

What is the best yarn for a crochet washcloth?

This one is a quick simple one to answer…cotton! And preferably 100% cotton. And especially if you’re going to be using the washcloth for washing skin.

Being a natural fibre it has some qualities that you’re not going to get with the acrylic or other manmade fibres. Cotton is much more absorbent and it absorbs more quickly. Cotton also has better stitch definition and will hold it’s shape for much longer. And once it ages you can also compost it, which means that it is better for the environment at the end of it’s life too.

If you’re using the washcloth in the kitchen, then cotton is also the better choice as it will allow you to also use it as a pot mitt or pot mat – assuming it is dry and not wet! Acrylic yarns cannot hold as much heat as cotton and can burn or melt much more easily, making them a hazard in the kitchen.

Which cotton you use is then totally up to you. I have been using KnitPicks Dishie yarns for years to make washcloths. It’s hard wearing and has a lovely selection of colours. And it is quite reasonably priced too. And it comes in 100g balls so you only need one ball for most washcloths. As long as it is 100% cotton though, you’ll be fine.

Knowing which yarns to use for which projects is all part of becoming more Crochet Confident. Something that I am here to help you with. If you’re wanting more Crochet Confidence then be sure to hit subscribe to this blog, or join my email list so that I can keep on helping you!
