An Easy Way to Join Squares Together When They are all Different

I lvoe granny squares. And I love blankets that use a mix of different squares. The tricky part comes when it is time to join them though. They don’t all have the same stitch count, might be slightly different sizes or different style edges. They can be joined by sewing them together or with single crochet, but I really wanted to test out a ‘fancy’ style with a blanket I was making.

I absolutely love this blanket. One day I plan to make this in a much bigger version, but for now I will love this one. The key to joining these was the round I added to each one before joining. And quite frankly I could have joined then with just the added round too, but I wanted to make this one look more ‘fancy’.

The trick to making them easy to join is to add a round of traditional granny stitches. The beauty of them is that all you need to make sure of is that each round has the same number of grannie stitches. For the join I used it was also important to have a chain space between each granny stitch too. The most important part though is to get the same number of granny stitches on each side. I did this by skipping 3 stitches inbetween as my general guide. Some squares had more stitches in the last round so I had to skip more stitches or skip them unevenly. But it didn’t matter as long as I kept the same number in the last round.

You can then opt to join as you go with the granny stitch or try some other join as you go styles. I joined with a double crochet, chain one, skip one repeated, joining at the chain 1 spaces. I recommend checking out Cypress Textiles or googling for join as you go as many options will come up.

If you love a granny square then you also might want to check out the Hooked on Crochet Club. I provide a brand new granny square every single month and there is a library of 5 years worth waiting for you!
