I love mini coin purses. I really don’t have a use for them these days, not for coins anyway, but I will always find them to be the sweetest of purses. I was rummaging through my craft stock draws recently and uncovered a bunch of purse frames that I had bought years ago. I decided to have a go at making one from granny squares.
This is the final result! I’m also a lover of simple flowers too, so I had to make this one feature flowers.

Now of course you can get as creative as you like with these, but I’ll provide you with some things to consider when creating your own.
- use a mercerised cotton. 4ply is a good thickness. It will be harder wearing and the finished square has more structure to it
- pick a square with as few a gaps and spaces as possible if you want to avoid lining it
- if you want to line it, try and find a mini calico or organza bag to have less sewing to do
I can’t recall exactly where I purchased the purse frame from, but figure that it was ebay. You can find them now days on AliExpress or a simple google search for purse frames.
It was a little tricky using only three squares, but I made it work. There is a square on the base and I joined two sides of the base square to one square and the last two sides to the second square. That made it so that the corners were at the top, which gave an ‘arched’ shape to attach to the purse frame. I didn’t take photos before I joined, but I thought it might be easier to explain where to attached with a graphic.

I joined with right sides together so that the seam was on the inside. Square 1 attaches to the base square where the blue lines are placed. Square 2 attaches to the base square where the pink lines are placed. The edges that are free on square 1 and square 2 are then sewn into the purse frame. You need a bit of patience, but the end result is worth it!
If you love granny squares, then you might want to give my square a day challenge a go! It has 5 squares over 5 days and everything you need to learn, no matter what your preferred learning style.
