How to Crochet an Ice Block Holder from Granny Squares

Summer is closing down in one hemisphere and getting ready to fire up in another so this month’s granny square project idea is kind of timely…

One of my members from the Hooked on Crochet Club reached out with a suggestion for a project idea, so I decided to give it a first try with granny squares. What did she ask for? An ice block holder – for those ice blocks in the plastic sleeves. My adult children still keep these in our freezer so I went ahead and created one!

The concept is simple. I made two granny squares and joined the top and bottom of each together first. The folded the joined squares in half and joined them together to make a tube. Once the tube was made I put the seam to the middle and crocheted the bottom together so that the ice block can’t fall through. The I added a border around the top to tidy it up.

Simple!

There are many ways to create these. I would stick with a cotton or wool yarn or other natural fibre. Natural fibres will help retain the temperature better. You could also make lots more mini squares to created a long narrow rectangle, or two rectangles that you can then join to create a tube too. Two squares seemed much quicker and simpler for me though, so that is what I went with.

These would make a simple project to sell at a market stall too. Or for stocking fillers.

How would you recreate these?

If you would love to be able to have someone create designs for your ideas you can join the Hooked on Crochet Club too! I can help your ideas come to life and almost all of our projects include instructions for how you can change them into something else. Set your creativity free with me!
