I’ve had a project going for a few years that I finally finished recently, and I think it is one that everyone should crochet once in their lifetime. And it is a project that I think is totally under appreciated.
Can you guess what it is?

A traditional granny blanket!
Do you know why I recommend it? There are so many reasons. They are so calming to make. There is a reason that they have continued to be made for decades, and I believe that that is the main reason for it. We sometimes forget that the simplest of projects can be fun to make and so therapeutic too.
They’re also great ways to use up yarn in your stash. They don’t need to be perfectly styled. There is something about the granny blankets that are just a mix of different yarn colours and combinations. I’ll be the first to admit that I never wanted to make a granny blanket. There are many from decades ago when crocheters had more limitations in the yarn they could access (thank you internet and online shopping for saving us!) that I struggled to love, but it’s different now. I made the one pictured above and I love it!
They are a project that you can do without having to concentrate. This blanket was one that got me through a lot of zoom calls for work. I didn’t have to concentrate to make it and it kept me from getting bored when all I had to do was listen.
So have you made a traditional granny blanket? Do you agree that it is worth the time?
If you need a pattern to get you started I’ve included a chart below. If you want access to full tutorials to make the square – in right and left handed – then check out my Square a Day Challenge too.
