I was recently gifted some rainbow mini yarns from Yazzy’s Yarn and decided to turn it into a top! My go to is a granny square as it is simple to make and doesn’t require any shaping to create it. Below is the end result!

To make this top I first created two large granny squares. You can use any square that you prefer. I used from from the library of the Hooked on Crochet Club. I decided to work with the rainbow and started with the red and worked my way out and finished with the blue. How big you make it will depend on the size top you want to create. Aim to make it reach the peak of the wearer’s shoulders or across their bust – whichever is biggest. You’ll need to make sure the squares are the same size.
Once you have two squares you then need to join them together. Place them right sides together and use slip stitch to join across the shoulders and down the sides. Make sure you leave enough space for their head and arms to go through.
When the pieces are joined you can then work on creating the bands. You’ll need to work around the neck and arm holes and then around the base. I always follow that order to ensure that I have enough yarn for everything. My go to band is to do a round of double crochet (UK treble) and then rounds of alternating front and back post double crochets until I get to the desired length. you could also opt to keep it even more simple and just do rounds of single crochet (UK double crochet). How many rounds you do is entirely up to you. I finished each band off with two rounds of single crochet.
This top is a relaxed fit on me – currently a size 12-14 Aus in the top. Each colour was 20g and I used 2 of each of the colours for the entire top. There was one 20g ball of the white and I had plenty of that left over. It was a lovely cotton to work with too! You can check out the box and other cottons in the Yazzy’s Yarn store.
