Popcorn and Puff stitches are two of my favourite for adding texture to designs. They both look like little balls, and can be easy to mix up if you’re new to them. Let me explain the difference, link you to my tutorials and suggest some patterns that you can use to practice them both in.

Let me start with a popcorn stitch. This is probably one of the most popular stitch for adding texture. It is made from making 4 or 5 double crochets (UK trebles) into a single stitch and then pinching the tops of them together to create a ball. These stitches typically pop out to the front of your work, so they’re usually made on every second row so that you can see them. It is possible to make them pop out to the back too though by changing how to pinch the tops together.
A puff stitch is made very differently. You make it by yarning over, inserting your hook and yarning over again and pulling up a loop multiple times. Once you have the loops on your hook you then yarn over and pull through all of them to pinch them together too. What I love about this one is that it adds texture on both sides of your crochet fabric so it is more versatile if you don’t want a right side and wrong side.
Below are links to tutorials for both.
Now to give you an opportunity to practice them I have also bundled together five of my washcloth patterns that use either popcorn or puff stitch to create texture in the design. You can’t find this bundle in my store, only in a secret location, so be sure to head to the link below to purchase so that you don’t miss out.

Let me know too which stitch is your favourite!
