Pocket scarves have been extremely popular so I thought it time to create one from granny squares!

If you can make a granny square of any kind, and you can join them then you’re going to be able to make a scarf like this. Now this one could easily be made longer. It’s the perfect length worn as pictured, but is going to be too short to wrap around my neck to wear it. I’ve a little uncertain about making it long enough to do that though as I have images of being strangled by it when using the pockets. An odd thought, but that is what comes to mind. I was also limited by the amount of yarn that I had too. I still had plenty of red left, but did not have enough grey if I wanted to keep to the design I chose. When wearing it and putting my hands in the pockets, the pockets sit at around the height of pockets in a hoodie or jacket, so the length felt right to me.
I have made this with an acrylic sport weight yarn and a square from the Hooked on Crochet Club Library. I’ve joined the squares using slip stitch to give it a really solid and firm join. To give you an idea on numbers, I have used a total of 34 squares and had two balls of grey and 1 ball of red – they were 100g balls of KnitPicks Brava Sport that I had in my stash.
I’ve used 4 squares on each end for the pockets. I’ve joined them separate to the scarf and then added them on. Once the pockets were added I also did a border with two rounds of single crochet just to neaten up the squares.
If you’re going to make one then you have many options. You can choose any fibre yarn. How many squares you make is going to depend on the size of the square. Mine are roughly 10cm each. I debated making bigger squares and only having one for the width instead of two, but I didn’t have the yarn for that. How big you make the pockets is going to depend on the size that you want and the size of your hands. These are a really good size and will be big enough for my hands as well as things like my phone, wallet and keys.
Hopefully this sparks some ideas for you to make your own! I’ll be sharing more detail on how I made it with the members of my Hooked on Crochet Club in the coming week. If you really like granny squares then I encourage you to join us. We have a library with well over 60 squares and I share a design idea with them every single month.
