Front post stitches are one of those ‘love hate’ stitches. They can be confusing when you’re first working with them, but they are really good for creating some awesome designs. And you need to know how to make them to create cable stitches too. So while they can be intimidating, there is just one simple rule to follow that will make them all seem really easy in future.
This simple rule applies to ANY front post stitch. You can follow my tutorial for a front post double crochet (front post treble in UK terms) and use that to apply the simple rule.
So what is the rule? The rule to remember is that you need to push the stitch out to the front. To do this you can work with any basic crochet stitch and you work around the post of the stitch in the row or round below instead of into it. When you’re working around the post you’re going to follow these instructions:
- work the yarn over/s in your basic stitch the same as you always do
- insert your hook on the hook hand side of the post, from the front of your work to the back of your work
- then move your hook behind the post and poke it out on the yarn hand side of the post to the front of your work
- the post of the stitch should be laying on top of your hook
- yarn over and pull the hook back through to where you began
- work the rest of your stitch the way you normally would.

You can use these instructions to make any front post stitches. The most common ones you’ll come across in a pattern and front post double crochet and front post treble (in US terms).
If you want to practice these in different designs, then you’ll love this month’s washcloth bundle as they all have front post stitches in them!
