Can You Use Different Yarns in One Crochet Project?

Can you use different yarns in one crochet project? Short answer is yes!

This has been something that I have been reluctant to try, but I had an urge to use up some of my stash of single hanks of yarn by combining them with other yarns. I have to say that I was super please with the results too.

Now there are some different things to consider if you are going to combine different yarns together.

One is to try and stick to the same ply. This will just make everything easier to mix and match. All of the yarns that I used were a DK / 8ply weight, but they all worked up slightly differently in size even when using the same sized hook.

You also want to consider the recommended wash for each yarn. I used a cotton/silk blend, two different blends with a superwash merino and the forth was a Yak Down. All feel really different and all are washed differently too. Just make sure that you wash to the most sensitive yarn so that you don’t ruin the final piece.

That’s about it really. I encourage you to give it a go, especially if it means that you’ll get to use up more yarn from your stash. I definitly am glad that I did, and I’ll do it again.

So what did I make? My plan had been to make a poncho, but I under-estimated the yarn and ended up making a cowl instead. I am totally in love though! And of course it became this month’s granny square inspiration that I’ll be sharing first with my Hooked on Crochet Club members. I’ll share it on YouTube too, so be sure to subscribe so that you can see how I made it.
