How to Crochet a Choker from Granny Squares

Are chokers even a thing anymore? I have no idea, but I do love them. And if they’re not for you, don’t run away as this can be turned into a head band instead…

To make this I’ve used a mercerised 4ply (fingering/sport weight) cotton and a 3mm hook. I recommend it as it will give a bit of shine and will last longer. It aslo has less stretch than an acrylic so will keep its shape better too.

The square I used is just two rounds of one from the Hooked on Crochet Club library. You could use any square, even a traditional granny. I joined by invisible join and then added a border in slip stitch. I recommend starting the border in a corner on one of the short ends. In the middle of the short edge I stopped and created a chain to create the ties and then worked back down the chain to the squares and continued with the border. You could also just attached some yarn instead or join with a button or stud.

This one is really quick and simple to make. If you would rather turn it into a head band you can add more squares and/or make the ties longer.

i did the slip stitch border to make it less stretchy – something you will definitely want to consider if you opt for a stretchier yarn.

If you’ve not discovered granny squares yet, then you should check out my Square a Day Challenge! you can start it anytime and it will teach you five squares over five days. Granny squares are super versatile to play with and can be turned into almost anything.

What yarn and square will you choose to make one of these? It will make a great stocking filler and could even sell on a market stall…
