A Simple Crocheted Christmas Bauble

Did someone say Christmas?! It only seems fitting to create something Christmassy for this month’s granny square inspiration. I’ve been meaning to create a bauble from a Granny Square for ages! I bought a packet of clear baubles just for that purpose and then left them unsed for 12 months. I probably would have left it even longer except one of my Hooked on Crochet Club members was asking for Christmas ideas. So of course I had to give it a try…

This one ended up turning out exactly as intended on the first try!

The yarn I’ve used is Scheepjes Twinkle. It’s one of my favourite sparkly yarns as it has a bit of stretch to it and it is really easy to work with. I’ve used others that just feel scratchy and don’t play nicely with the hook. And they have quite a few colours to choose from too.

The baubles I ordered from Amazon. They’re clear and quite durable and a good size for what I wanted. The can also be used for other crafts to decorate them and you can fill them too – so many options and definitely worth having in your craft treasure chest!

For the square I chose a hexagon from the library of the Hooked on Crochet Club. Using a hexagon makes it closer to being a circle. This makes it easier to get to the to right size and be able to sew it together more neatly at the top. The more decorative you can make the middle of the square, the more decorative it will look when you finish creating it. I only had to do 5 rounds to get the right size, and you want to make sure that it needs to stretch a bit to pull tight.

I’ve sewn the hexagon to the top by eaving through the stitches and corners and pulling it tight as I went.

This is a relatively quick and easy make!

If you love granny squares, then I encourage you to check out the Hooked on Crochet Club. There are now different levels and the entry level gives you access to all of the granny squares plus tutorials for how to make them and how to turn them into other things.
