A Washcloth to Test You on Working in the Row Below

I always like to provide you with a new skill to test when I publish my washcloths and this one is no different. This one is perfect for an advanced beginner and will test your skills on working into the row below. It only uses basic stitches, but by working into the row below the one you’re making it adds a layer of difficulty, but also ends up creating a wonderful texture as well!

If you’re confident in making chains and double crochet (UK treble), then you’re definitely ready to embark on testing out this washcloth. It can be a little tricky as the stitches you’re working into tend to sit a little differently than what you’re used to, but it is definitely worth the effort to try. And once you get a few rows in, it becomes pretty straight forward and an easy pattern repeat to pick up.

How cool is the texture?! When you’re making it it can look a bit rough and wonky on the edges, but once you add the border it all looks nice and even again. And the stitches you work into the row below are worked over a chain space, so it is easy to figure out which stitches need to go where.

As with all my washcloths, I used Knit Picks Dishie Yarn. The navy blue looks darker than this in real life, but was easy enough to work with. You might want to choose a lighter colour the first time you make this one though as you want to be able to see there the top of the stitch is. You can also use any 100% cotton in your stash.

This washcloth is available to all our current members of the Hooked on Crochet Club inside their private hub. The doors are open until July 14th (tomorrow night if you’re reading this on the day of release). There is still time to become a member if you want to build more Crochet Confidence and have access to the washcloth we release every month as well as personalised help with it if you need it.

You can also purchase it as a one off in any of my store locations below. I’ve named it Crosshatch as the texture kind of reminds me of crosshatching. If you enjoy making it and want to use the design to make something bigger, then the instructions for how to adjust it are also included.

  1. Hi Seona,

It’s Chantal, and I am a clubhouse member since your first masterclass last Friday.

Where can I find this washcloth?

Is this my first project I need to start with or would you prefer that i continue on practicing my stitches?

I can’t wait to have a tour of the clubhouse, right now I am going blindly checking things here and there out of curiosity, but really to tell you the truth, I don’t know where to start …

I saw the introduction post which I did, but other than that…I have been practicing my basic stitches except the double crochet which I know with my eyes closed, and keeping the accountability post for July updated.

It’s time for me to say goodnight & havens great day!

    1. Hello Chantal! I love that you’ve been working on the basics and getting comfortable with those, it’s a great place to start. I promise the tour will come soon, and I’ll also get some additional videos into the hub for where to start.

The washcloth is in the hub now! If you click on washcloths on the homepage, scroll to the bottom you will see it there. I’ll send an email link out on the weekend too – but for now a direct link to the washcloth page is here too: https://hub.crochetlearningcorner.com/page/KNYpm

If you want to move beyond the basic stithes then I would scroll through the monthly projects page and see if any of the small projects look like somehting you want to try. If you find one and click on the page then it will show you what basic stitches you need to know. If it uses the stitches you’re comfortable with, then feel free to jump in and give it a go πŸ™‚
