How Do You Get Better at Crocheting

For some crocheting comes naturally, like they were born to it. For others it seems to be a struggle. But it’s a struggle that CAN be overcome with some patience and the right guidance.

The first thing I would recommend to help you improve is to make the time to practice. The more consistent and more frequent you can be at making that time, the more it will help you to improve on your crochet. Why? Because everytime you put your hook down and walk away and come back to it, you’re having to refresh what you learned from last time. The more frequently you are crocheting, the easier it will be to refresh your memory. Especially when you are first starting out. It is better to make a half to one hour block daily than to make that time just once a week. Spread it out to weeks, months or more inbetween and you’re just making it harder to learn. Over time you’ll remember more and more muscle memory will kick in too so that you can add on to what you have learned instead of relearning what you already practiced last time.

Next would be to make sure that you’re not jumping steps in what you’re learning. If you haven’t learned the basic stitches and how to create them in different ways then it is too soon to be jumping into making a project. You’re going to slow down your progress by having to learn too many things at once if you try to start making a project too soon. And how soon that is in hours or days or weeks is entirely dependent on the individual. You might find that you can make stitches confidently within a few tries, and others might take weeks or months to master it. If you’re one that is taking weeks or months to get the hang of something new, then be kind to yourself. There is no race in learning – and as the old saying goes, slow and steady wins the race. Each stitch you practice takes you one stitch closer to mastering it. Giving up is not going to help you improve.

The rest comes down to who and what you surround yourself with. Having the right people and library of information around you is key. This modern age with the internet makes it soooo much easier to find who and what you need to help you. If you need help in person check out your local library or search for crocheting groups near you. There is bound to be one that you’re not aware of that you can attend on a routine basis. If you can learn from videos and written guides then the internet is defintely your friend.
