What is the Slip Stitch Used For in Crochet?

Ever wondered what you can use slip stitch for? Slip stitch is a very overlooked stitch and one that we just bandy about expecting everyone to know what it is.

There are two main purposes for a slip stitch. The first is that it is used to join the last stitch to the first stitch when you get to the end of a round. This is useful when you’re making squares or anything round. The second is that it can be used to travel across to another stitch without being too obvious and so that you don’t have to fasten off and start again. I use this in many square designs to move across to a corner to start the next round.

But did you know that it is also able to be used as a stitch in a pattern? I’ve always been somewhat reluctant to try it as making anything in slip stitch is going to take a really long time. Plus I always assumed it would be really difficult to work into. Well I am happy to report that it is easy to work into and if used with another stitch, it actually can work up really quickly!

I came across a stitch design that alternates half double crochet (UK half treble) and slip stitch, and can I just say that it is one of my favourite textured stitch designs! I’ve incorporated it into this month’s washcloth design so that you can give it a go too. Let me know what you think!

And even better, this is my first borderless washcloth! How straight are all those sides?! This is one that I would easily make over and over and can even see it becoming a gorgeous bathmat with tassels off the ends.

I’ve used KnitPicks Dishie yarns once again to make this washcloth.
