How to Make a Table Runner from Granny Squares

This project was not intended to become a table runner, but that’s how it ended up! It was also meant to be square, but it turns out I didn’t have enough yarn to make it to the size square that I wanted. So here we have my table runner for a coffee table.

Now it might not have been the projec that I originally intended, but I am definitely happy with it!

I used Scheepjes Legacy yarn for this one and a 2.5mm hook. This yarn is designed with doily making in mind. It’s a lovely cotton that comes in different weights but only in white or cream.

I was originally planning on making a bolero with it, but it soon became clear that I wouldn’t have enough yarn for that. I then decided I would make a square table runner for our 8 seater square dining table. It eventually became clear that I wouldn’t be able to do that either. I was joining as I went and started with 7 squares in one row as that was what I needed to get the width of my shoulders. If you prefer a square one and have limited yarn then I recommend either making the squares before you join them or work from the middle out.

Once I accepted the size I then left enough yarn to add a border. I made up the border as I went. you can see the details in the image below. It was rounds of moss stitch, and then mixed it up by changing some of the rounds from single crochet to double crochet and half double crochet (all US terms).

The square is one from my Hooked on Crochet Club library that has a final round with chains so that it can be joined as you go. You can join with any sttich design that you prefer though. You can use any square that you prefer.

I would recommend using a cotton yarn of some sort. A mercerised one will give you more structure too. And I would use a 4 ply or thinner so that it isn’t too chunky.

I hope that this inspires you to make your own!
