Raise your hand if your yarn stash has it’s own postcode πββοΈ! Or maybe you’ve wondered if it’s time to open your own yarn store because you know that you’ll never use all that you’ve purchased in this life time…

All jokes aside, having a yarn stash is an almost inevitable sign that you’ve become hooked on crochet. It can be so easy to do. You see a kit that you like or your favourite yarn in a limited edition colourway (hello Lola’s!), or there is a sale so you decide to stock up on your favourite yarns. Or maybe someone asks you to make them something and you get excited, buy all the yarn you need just to have them change their mind.
We’ve all been there! Or we will be one day…
But we don’t stop. There is the thrill of the parcel arriving. The delight in getting to feel how soft and squishy it really is. The colour makes your heart sing and you just feel so happy looking at it. You get to start something new and delight in how it all works up. Or you get to stare at it sitting on the shelf and you dream and imagine all of the things that you could turn it in to.
It’s addictive.
But sometimes it becomes a problem.
If you run out of space to store it. Or find yourself hiding it away from your partner so that they don’t know how much more you just bought. You end up with sooo many WIPs that are left unfinished, even though you had the best of intentions.
So you put yourself on a yarn ban.
We all know how that goes!
So what can we do instead?
Embrace it. Do better at working through what we have. Frog projects so that we can use the yarn for something we really love to make. Find a destash site and swap it with someone. Give it away.
There are so many choices.
I know that I will always have more yarn than I will ever need. But I have my yarn purchases somewhat under control now. I have a better understanding of what yarn I do and don’t like to work with, so it is easier to be selective in what I buy. I have stash yarn that I will always try and buy when it is on sale. And I will always try and choose a yarn from my stash when deciding on a new design – though it is amazing how often that I have the wrong colours or not enough!
If you want to get your yarn stash under control or if you want to build a stash that you’re more likely to love, then you should come and join us in the Hooked on Crochet Club. We love yarn! Every month I will give a yarn review of a yarn that I have tried so that you have a library of yarns to choose from from all over the world. The library is sorted by location, ply and fibre so that you can quickly choose from what I have recommended and find out which ones to avoid. I also teach what yarns can be used for which projects so that you can make better choices from the yarn you already own.
Do you have a yarn stash that has become a problem? Or are you really really good at only buying what you need? How have you managed it? Share with us so that we can learn from you too…

I am guilty of having a yarn stash that could have its own post code .
I have donated yarn I was never going to use to a local knitting group.
I much prefer cotton yarn or a cotton blends nowdays.

Thatβs a great idea! I should probably look at donating some of mine too! There is definitely yarn Iβve acquired that Iβll never end up using.
