Crochet Granny Square Wrap Top Using the Radiant Puff Granny

Crochet Granny Square Wrap Top Using the Radiant Puff Granny

One of my favourite things about granny squares is that making the square is really only the beginning. Once you know how to make them, there are so many different ways you can turn them into something you actually want to use or wear.

For my October granny square project, I knew I wanted to make a wrap top.

So I went back through the Clubhouse library looking for a square I hadn’t turned into anything before. I wanted something that had enough detail to make the finished top interesting, without being so busy that it competed with the yarn.

The Radiant Puff Granny was exactly what I was looking for.

Choosing the Radiant Puff Granny

The Radiant Puff Granny has texture and detail through the centre, but it still has a fairly simple overall look. There’s enough happening to make it interesting without every round trying to be the star of the show.

And because I hadn’t used this square in a project before, that was another good reason to choose it.

I have quite a few granny square patterns in the Clubhouse library now, and I love being able to go back through them when I have a project in mind. A square I designed months ago can suddenly be exactly right for something I want to make today.

This time, I needed one that would work for a wrap top — and work with the yarn I’d already decided I wanted to use.

Making Sure I Had Enough Yarn This Time

I had four 100g Lolas in the same colourway, and they were an easy choice for this project. I loved the colours, they’re colours that suit me, and most importantly, I had four of them.

That last part mattered!

I’ve started projects like this before and had to pivot because I realised I wasn’t going to have enough yarn to make what I’d originally planned. Sometimes that’s part of crochet. You adjust the design, change the size or turn it into something else entirely.

But I didn’t want to do that with this one. I wanted a wrap top, and having four matching Lolas meant I could start without worrying that I’d have to change my plans halfway through.

As it turns out, I needn’t have worried quite so much.

I only used three of them.

I could actually have made more squares and made the top a little bigger if I’d wanted to. But I’d much rather finish with yarn left over than get most of the way through and realise I’m not going to be able to make the project I had planned.

Turning the Radiant Puff Granny Into a Wrap Top

Once I’d chosen the square and knew I had enough yarn, it was a matter of working out how many squares I needed and how I wanted them arranged to create the shape of the top.

And this is one of the things I really enjoy about creating projects from granny squares.

The individual squares become building blocks. You can lay them out, move them around and start to see how they can create a completely different shape once they’re joined together.

For this project, the joined Radiant Puff Grannies create the main body of the bolero-style wrap top, with the longer crocheted sections forming the ties that wrap around the body.

The changing colours of the Lolas do a lot of the work visually too. Even though every square uses the same pattern, they don’t all look identical. The gradual colour changes give the finished top interest without me needing to use lots of different square designs.

That’s also why the Radiant Puff Granny worked so well. There was already plenty happening with the colour, so I didn’t need an overly complicated square competing with it. The puff stitches add texture and interest while still allowing the yarn to shine.

One Granny Square, So Many Possibilities

This is why I keep coming back to granny squares.

Learning to crochet different squares isn’t just about ending up with a pile of squares.

It’s about learning to see what you can do with them.

A granny square can become a bag, a cushion, a blanket, a top, a cardigan or something completely different. Change the yarn and the same square can look completely different. Change the layout and you have another project again.

And sometimes, like with this wrap top, you start knowing exactly what you want to make and then find the square and yarn that will help you make it happen.

You might even buy yourself a little too much yarn just to be sure.

I’d still rather have that problem than run out!
