When you think of granny square projects, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Probably a blanket, cushion or bag. And while I love all of those, there are so many other ways we can use our granny squares around the home.
One of the things I enjoy about crochet is being able to take something ordinary and make it a little more personal. Sometimes it doesn’t even require making an entire project. Just one granny square can be enough to transform something you already have.
That’s exactly what I’ve done with my Pop Portrait Daisy Granny Square.

Turning a Granny Square Into Home Décor
I’d had the idea of decorating a reed diffuser bottle with a granny square for quite some time. I’d even ordered the bottles and reeds so that I could eventually bring the idea to life.
For this project, I’ve used Square #67 from my Hooked on Crochet Club collection, the Pop Portrait Daisy Granny Square. I love how the raised daisy creates texture and interest, while the soft colours give it a lovely decorative finish.
The process was really quite simple. I crocheted my granny square and used a hot glue gun to attach it to the outside of the bottle. That’s it!
I chose to purchase a bottle specifically for this project, but you could just as easily upcycle a suitable bottle that you already have at home. It’s a lovely opportunity to give something a new purpose rather than throwing it away.
If you’re making your own, just be mindful of the size and shape of your bottle when choosing your granny square. You’ll also want to make sure your square is securely attached and kept clear of the bottle opening.
Other Ways to Use Granny Squares Around Your Home
This little project is a reminder that granny squares don’t always need to be joined together to become something useful or beautiful.
You could use a granny square to decorate a glass jar, embellish a storage container or add a decorative touch to a basket. You might even find something around your home that’s looking a little plain and decide to give it a crochet makeover.
And there’s no reason to limit yourself to one particular granny square design. A floral square creates a completely different look from a traditional granny square, and changing the yarn colours can make the same design suit different spaces around your home.
It’s also a wonderful way to use some of those individual squares you’ve made while learning or experimenting with new stitches.
You Don’t Need to Be Creative to Get Started
Something I often remind my members is that you don’t need to think of yourself as a creative person to enjoy making things with crochet.
Creativity develops as you explore different possibilities. You might start by following a pattern exactly as it’s written, then decide to change the colours, experiment with a different yarn or use the finished piece for something entirely different.
That’s part of what I love about granny squares. They’re a manageable way to practise your crochet skills while giving yourself the freedom to experiment.
And sometimes, a square that started out as a way to learn something new becomes the inspiration for a project you hadn’t even considered.
What Could You Make With One Granny Square?
I’d encourage you to have a look around your home and see what you could decorate with a granny square. Perhaps there’s a jar, bottle or container that could use a little personality.
You don’t need to plan something elaborate or spend hours crocheting. Start with one square, choose something you’d like to decorate and see what you can create.
You might surprise yourself with what you come up with.
