There are so many ways to make a cushion cover from granny squares. If squares are your favourite thing to crochet then you are never going to run out of options for using them to make cushion covers either! If you prefer to make one big square and turn it into a cushion cover then you’ll want to see my Simple Cushion Cover blog post from a couple of years ago. If you have lot of squares to use up, then the one below is inspiration for you!

This cushion I made from yarn in my stash that was used to make a cushion for the Hooked on Crochet Club a few years ago. It seemed fitting to use the same yarn to make a matching cushion. The yarn is Scheepjes Metropolis, chosen at the time as it had the colours that I was looking for. I would normally choose a cheaper yarn for cushions, but the original cushion has lasted well, so I am not sorry for the expense. It’s a lovely yarn to work with too.
I opted to go with a simple 3 round square. Each one is approximately 5.5cm square. I have used a 44cm cushion insert and made 64 squares for the front. I’ve randomly placed them as I had different amounts of each colour left and I tend to lean towards random placements. The back I did with the same square, but made it one big square instead.

I joined the squares together on the front using single crochet join. The back I kept increasing until it was the same size as the front piece. I have made this cover so that it can’t be removed as I know that over time button closures tend to come loose. I have joined the two pieces together using two rounds of single crochet, inserting the cushion before joining the forth side.
There really are limitless options to creating a cushion from squares. If you only know how to make the one granny square then changing up the colour combinations is a simple way to make a different cushion every time. They make for a wonderful housewarming gift, or gift for anything really! In my world you can never have nough cushions.
Any yarn is suitable too. Though you’ll want one that is likely to wear well if the cushion is going to be in a high use area.
I’ll be giving a hook and learn lesson in the Hooked on Crochet Club this month to demonstrate how I made this cushion. If you’re not a member then you should come check us out!
What square and yarn are you thinking you’ll use to make a cushion?
