What Can You Make with Granny Squares?

Granny Squares are one of my favourite things to make. Each square is a mini project that gives you a feeling of satisfaction every time you finish one. They can be simple or mindless to make or more challenging and fun to make. There are so many options of granny squares to make and so many things that you can turn them into. Whether it is one square, a handful of squares or hundreds of them, there is always something you can create from them. If you can master a granny square, you will never be bored again!

Bookmarks are a small and fun project to make with a granny square. I’ve made quite a few designs of over the years and have many more in mind to make too! You only need one square to make one, but you can also make them with 2 or 3 or more depending on your design preference. I recommend using a 4ply mercerised cotton or a finer yarn if you are as it is then not too bulk for the book. And you’ll want to avoid textured stitches. Below are some examples that I have made and you can find them at these posts:

Bags and Pouches are something that we can never get enough of right? You can make so many different varieties depending on how many squares you have and how big they are. One square can make you an envelope style pouch. The more squares you have the more options you have. Below are some examples of what I have made and the posts that they link to – and they’re just the beginning of possibilities! You’ll want to use a not-so-stretchy yarn or line your bag if you’re making a bigger one.

Tops, vests and ponchos are perfect for making from granny squares. You don’t need to worry about shaping as a simple rectangle or square shape is all that you need. They are perfect for layering in the cooler months and the one style can be recreated in so many different looks just by choosing a different square, a different colour or a different yarn. The choices are entirely up to you. I’ve made a few now as shown below and linked to their posts. You can use any fibre for these – raid your stash or buy something new, but be mindful of any wash instructions if you don’t like to fuss with your washing.

Cushion Covers are one of my favourite things to crochet too. And they’re like tops – so may ways to make them different! You can seal them up entirely (my preference), or create them as an envelope or zip them or add buttons for closure if you prefer to be able to remove the cover from the insert. You can make them with one square or many. Not all of my cushions are from granny squares, but a few of them have made it to my blog as shown below.

Blankets are a given to make with granny squares. And even they can be made from one big one if you keep the square growing. Below are some examples of what I have made and shared on this blog. A lot more than I thought!

Scarves and Cowls cannot be forgotten! Like everything else, the only limit is your imagination. And I think it is clear that even if you only learn one square ever, you can turn it into sooooo many different things that you will never be bored!

What I have shared here is only a fraction of what you can actually make. Scroll through all my posts to look for gloves, wall hangings, headwarmers, and slippers for other ideas.

If you want to learn some granny squares and see what the fuss is all about, then my Square a Day Challenge is exactly what you need. It is hosted three times a year, but it will be available to do at any time that your time allows. It is perfect for learning new skills and getting more confident in making and designing with granny squares. You can sign up now if you’re ready!

And if you already love granny squares, be sure to subscribe to this blog as I have a new idea every single month to inspire you!

What is something that you’ve always wanted to make from granny squares? Maybe I can add it to my list to make too…

  1. I once did your square a day challenge using some left over 4ply. I was then asked if I could please finish them off properly so that they could be used for doll’s face washers 😀
