How to Make a Summer Top with Granny Squares

It’s summer in Australia and I’m always in need of new summer tops. I decided to make one with the foundation of it as granny squares! What do you think?

I have used a 4ply 100% cotton (Hobbii’s Rainbow 4/8) and a square from the Hooked on Crochet Club and a 4mm hook. I made the design up as I went, but I began with the band of squares around the top and kept making squares until it was long enough to fit around my bust. I have then made the squares I needed for the straps.

Once the top part was made I edged it and then added rounds to the bottom until it got to the length I needed. I had different thoughts in my head about adding more squares, and adding in some colour, but in the end I opted to keep it simple and created what you see now. Maybe next time I’ll change it up a bit with colour or more squares. I’d also consier making the straps shorter or adding more rounds to the neck line, but for now it works.

It’s simple. It could definitely be improved on, but it will serve me well this summer! I have the perfect tank top to wear under it and plan to match it with some linen pants that are also in my wardrobe.

If you’re keen to start designing your own crochet tops, then look at granny squares as an easy way to create! You don’t need to do any shaping and the options are infinite. Scroll back through my blog for other ideas.

  1. It looks great, thank you for the inspiration. I will definitely be adding this to my ‘to do’ list for the first part of the year.

  2. I think something simple to put over a plain Tee is a great idea. I would make mine a little loose to hide my lumps and bumps. Thank you so much.

  3. So cute, I love this idea! The problem is, I only have one ball of pink yarn left, and I won’t have enough after the sleeves. Is changing color possible? I’m still learning how to crochet.

  4. The gaps between are too wide, therefore making it visible underneath 😳 how do I close this? I’m nearly done with it, and when I was crocheting it, it looked fine.

    1. It is hard to give guidance without seeing the square you’ve used. There is most likely not anything you can do with the crocheted fabric. You can line it with fabric if you sew or wear a singlet or sports bra under it in a nuetral skin tone or colour to match the yarn you used.
