How Many Granny Squares Can you Get from a Soft Fun Mini Pack

I’ve had three Scheepjes Soft Fun Mini Pack in my stash for a few years now. if you’re not familiary with them, they a set of twelve mini yarns from the Soft Fun range. They’re cute, they have a few different colour options and they make for an easy gift idea for a yarn lover.

The problem that I had was knowing what to do with them!

Because they’re in a pack there is a desire to use them together in a project. This becomes a problem when you then need to find a project that will use them all up together. I’ve had a plan to make a blanket from granny squares with them for a really long time, but even in that there are sooo many unkowns.

I finally broke a pack open and decided to play. I will say up front that I bought additional yarn for the joining. For me to figure out a design I had to begin with making squares, which meant I was faced with limitations. But my playing with them should now help you move forward with your pack with more confidence.

How much yarn a granny square is going to use is going to depend entirely on the square that you decide on. What I am providing here is a general idea that can help you decide on a project. I definitely could have been more strategic up front with this one, but I was also wanting to just ‘go with the flow’.

So let’s get into the details…

What I did:

  • I used a 3.5mm hook and a square from the library of my designs inside the Hooked on Crochet Club.
  • I went with 4 rounds instead of 5 and was able to make 5 squares from each little mini ball.
  • I ended up with a total of 60 squares and made the blanket 6 x 10 squares.
  • I used just over 2 x 50g balls of soft fun to join and add the border.
  • Final blanket is roughly 55cm x 90cm

What I could have done differently:

  • I could have made one square, weighed it and then performed math to determine how many squares I could get from each ball and then the entire pack.
  • I could have made the square bigger and ended up with fewer squares
  • Used a different number of squares so that the length was closer to the width or to create a square blanket

If you’re not going to use additional yarn for joining, then I would definitely encourage you to do more of what I could have done differently.

Overall I’m really happy with this blanket. It’s a little narrow for the length for my liking, but I’m picturing two toddlers sitting on a couch together and both being able to have the blanket across their legs. Cute!

It’s one thing to see a beautiful square…
It’s another to feel confident enough to make it yourself.

If you’ve ever found yourself:

  • second-guessing patterns
  • relying on YouTube to follow along
  • or unsure where to even start

you’re not alone.

That’s exactly why I created the Granny Square Club inside Hooked on Crochet Club.

Each month, you’ll receive a carefully designed square that helps you:

  • learn to read patterns (without overwhelm)
  • build your skills in a way that actually sticks
  • and create something you’re proud to finish

Because confidence doesn’t come from watching…
it comes from doing.
