How Crochet Helps You Slow Down and Let Go of Productivity Guilt

Softness Is Your Strength

There seems to be an unspoken expectation these days that we should always be doing something.

If we’re sitting down, we should be productive. If we’re resting, we should have earned it. If we’re taking time for ourselves, there should be a good reason.

It’s no wonder so many women struggle to simply stop.

Even our hobbies can become another item on the to-do list. We set goals, chase deadlines and measure our progress. Before long, something that once brought us joy starts to feel suspiciously similar to work.

That’s what inspired this month’s washcloth.

When I was designing it, I kept coming back to the idea of softness. Not just the softness of the stitches, but the softness that many of us seem reluctant to give ourselves.

The permission to slow down.

The permission to pause.

The permission to do nothing for a little while and let that be enough.

That’s where this month’s washcloth found its meaning.

Weightlessness.

The feeling of putting down the things you’ve been carrying. The feeling of releasing expectations, even if only for a few moments. The feeling of allowing yourself to simply be.

The stitch pattern reflects that idea beautifully. Lofty puffs and pillowy textures create a fabric that feels soft and comforting beneath your hands. It’s the kind of project that encourages you to settle into the rhythm of your stitches and enjoy the process without rushing toward the finish line.

Because sometimes the project itself isn’t the point.

Sometimes the point is how it makes you feel while you’re creating it.

When Productivity Guilt Creeps In

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is how quickly many of us feel guilty when we’re not being productive.

We sit down with a crochet project and suddenly start thinking about all the other things we “should” be doing.

The washing. The emails. The errands. The endless list that never quite seems to get any shorter.

Yet crochet offers something many of us desperately need.

A chance to be present. A chance to focus on one thing. A chance to create something with our hands simply because we enjoy it.

There’s value in that.

Not because it helps us become more productive later.

Not because we’ve earned it.

Simply because rest, creativity and enjoyment are worthwhile in their own right.

This Month’s Reflection

As you work through this month’s washcloth, I invite you to spend some time with this affirmation:

I can rest without apologising.

Not after you’ve finished everything. Not when you’ve earned it. Not once everyone else’s needs have been met.

Now.

And if you’d like to explore the idea a little further, spend some time journalling on this question:

How would my body feel if I allowed more softness?

It’s a simple question, but it may reveal more than you expect.
