Why Choosing a Crochet Project Feels so Hard (and What to Do About It)

Have you ever spent more time looking for a crochet project than actually crocheting?

A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through patterns I’d saved over the years and realised something. I had no shortage of ideas. There were granny squares I’d bookmarked, blankets I’d pinned, tops I’d saved on Instagram, and patterns I’d downloaded with every intention of making “one day”.

And yet, despite having all those options, choosing what to make next still felt surprisingly difficult.

I don’t think I’m alone in that.

One of the things I hear regularly from crocheters is that they struggle to decide what project to start next. Not because there aren’t enough patterns available, but because there are too many. Pinterest boards full of ideas. Instagram saves. Pattern collections. Crochet-alongs. New yarn releases.

Everywhere we look, there seems to be another project that we could be making.

Instead of helping us choose, all those options can sometimes make choosing even harder.

Why We Keep Looking

When we can’t decide what to make, it’s easy to convince ourselves that the answer is to keep searching.

Maybe there’s a better pattern.

Maybe there’s something more useful.

Maybe there’s a project we’ll enjoy more.

Maybe we just haven’t found the right one yet.

So we save another pattern. Add another project to our wishlist. Tell ourselves we’ll decide later.

But over the years, I’ve come to believe that most of the time we’re not actually looking for another pattern.

We’re looking for certainty.

We want to know we’ll enjoy the project before we start. We want to know we’ll have enough time to finish it. We want to know we’re choosing the “right” thing. We want to know we won’t get halfway through and wish we’d picked something else.

The problem is that crochet doesn’t come with those guarantees.

Every project is a little bit of an unknown until we begin.

The Real Problem

After teaching crochet for years I’ve observed that the most confident crocheters aren’t necessarily the most experienced.

They’re often the ones who trust themselves enough to begin.

They choose a project and give it a go. If they don’t love the yarn, they change it. If they make a mistake, they fix it. If they lose interest, they put it aside for a while and come back later.

They don’t expect themselves to get every decision right the first time.

I think many of us put so much pressure on choosing the perfect project that we forget crochet is supposed to be enjoyable.

We forget that changing our minds is allowed.

We forget that not every project has to become a masterpiece.

We forget that sometimes the purpose of a project is simply to give us a little time for ourselves at the end of a busy day.

The more I crochet, the more I’ve realised that confidence doesn’t come from making perfect choices. It comes from trusting yourself to handle whatever happens next.

What If You Trusted Yourself?

The next time you’re trying to decide what to crochet, I want you to try asking a different question.

Instead of asking, “What should I make?”

Ask yourself, “What do I feel like making?”

It’s a small shift, but I think it changes everything.

Maybe you’re feeling tired and want something repetitive that doesn’t require much concentration. Maybe you’re looking for a challenge because you’re ready to learn a new skill. Maybe you want a project that can be picked up for ten minutes at a time between everything else life demands of you.

There isn’t a right answer.

There is only the answer that’s right for you right now.

And that’s often enough.

Some of my favourite projects haven’t been the ones I spent weeks researching beforehand. They’ve been the ones I felt drawn to. The ones I started because they looked enjoyable. The ones I chose without overthinking every detail.

Sometimes the next project isn’t hiding in another pattern download.

Sometimes it’s already sitting in your favourites folder, waiting for you to trust yourself enough to begin.

Ready to Build More Confidence in Your Crochet?

One of the things I love most about the Hooked on Crochet Club is watching members become more confident in their own decisions.

Not because I’m telling them what to make, but because they’re learning to trust their skills, their preferences, and their instincts as crocheters. They begin to rely less on constant reassurance and more on what they already know.

If you’d like support as you build that confidence, I’d love to welcome you into the club.
