What is the Best Crochet Stitch for a Washcloth?

Good question! What is the best crochet stitch for a washcloth? And the simple answer is ALL OF THEM!

I think what is more important than the stitches, is the yarn that you use. When you’re making a washcloth you’re going to want a yarn that is absorbent and hard wearing. The best yarn for that is a 100% cotton. Cotton is a natural fibre and very absorbent and very hard wearing. And being a natural fibre it is also compostable once it is no longer useful. I have been using KnitPicks Dishie yarn for years to make my washcloths. It’s designed for the purpose and a reasonable price too. I have other cottons that I prefer to work with, but this one is a great yarn for the purpose, so I’ll continue to use it for a while yet.

But you’re here to find out what crochet stitch is best, so let me cover that now too.

I meant it when I said that any stitch works for a washcloth. But there are some things to consider when choosing one.

If you’re going to be using the washcloth a lot, then I would choose a design that has a ‘shorter’ stitch or design that it more dense. The reason for this is that the stitches will hold together better with constant use and the washcloth is more likely to retain it’s shape. So if you’re wanting to create one with a basic stitch then you can just go with single crochet or half double crochet. If you want to get a bit more fancy, then you could use the griddle stitch. You could also give the herringbone stitch or a simple moss stitch a go too.

If you want more texture in the washcloth then you could try a popcorn or bobble stitch. These are fun to make!

If all this is too much for you to choose from, then you might want to check out my washcloth patterns. At the time of writing this I am two thirds of the way through my fourth series of 12! I have been designing these as they are the perfect project for practicing new stitches and gaining some crochet confidence without getting overwhelmed. They available to purchase in my online store and a provided every month to my Hooked on Crochet Club members. And the added bonus is that every single pattern can provide you a base for turning it into a blanket or cushion or something else that sparks your creative mind as you make it.

Let me know which stitch or design you think you’ll try for your next washcloth!
